چکیده :
This paper is an attempt to look at Chinua Achebe’s and Lord Byron’s creation of a hero from Edward Said’s perspective on Orientalism. Orientalism, a broad discipline associated with religion, language, history, literature and law, etc. refers to the Western presentation of the Middle Eastern and Asian cultures, the Orient, and their people. This presentation, according to the colonial studies, is about how the western self and the oriental other are constructed or reconstructed. The west is superior and has the authority to define while the orient is fragile, indecisive and passive and must be defined and corrected by the western power. Such a formula legitimized the Western Imperialism over the Orient, forcefully or surreptitiously, not only physically but also institutionally and ideologically. Taking this system of knowledge into consideration, the paper delves into the creation of two canonical heroes in British and African Literature analyzing the paradoxical and hypocritical manner of looking at their ideologized presentations with the established discourse.
