چکیده :
The present study investigates the existence of two perspectives for understanding cyberspace in Joseph Kosinski’s Tron Legacy (2010). The study asks how the tension between an instrumental, perfectionist and teleological perspective, and an organic, imperfectionist and unpredictable one toward cyberspace affects the way the movie conceptualizes its spatial rendition of cyberspace (referred in the movie as the grid), the teleology of the grid and characters’ world views and behavioral patterns. Through utilizing Aylish Wood’s definitions on simulation and emergence, the study claims that the more characters are put in simulated, rationalized, positivist, non-social, decontextualized, suveiled and controlled set of circumstances, the less they experience the possibilities which cyberspace could bring about for them; the possibilities that emerge from the unanticipated, imperfect, imaginative, organic and network nature of the grid in the movie. It is through emerging in the grid, the movie depicts, that both mankind – represented by Sam Flynn – and cybernetic entities – represented by Quorra as one of the remaining Isomorphic Algorithms (ISO) – could face their imperfections, negotiate their ways into the simulated and perfected grid and create ruptures in it, and consequently fulfill their potentials like two naïve but potentially wise beings. As Olivia Efthimiou maintains in her studies, the grid would turn into a dreamscape that could empower both Sam and Quorra to transcend the limitations of the simulated grid. This dreamscape is an imperfect, unmappable – yet navigable – pseudo-holy terrain where its denizens face their worse imperfections and potentials.
