چکیده :
This paper is a Kierkegaardian study that aims at comparing three major female characters who are the protagonists of three Asian stories. What makes these three women comparable is the element of self-conscious despair as Sore Kierkegaard elaborated in theologically philosophical book entitled ‘The Sickness unto Death’. Referring to spirit and self as synonymous concepts, Kierkegaard states that the loss of the self brings about despair. Despair happens when, theologically speaking, the self as the finite cannot be in harmony with the God as the infinite. It means that the self fails to understand its true nature or its true self. He proposes three forms of despair: if the self is not conscious of having a self, if the self is not willing to be oneself and finally, if self is willing to be oneself. This emphasizes that a self exists in every form and if the self is conscious of itself, it will be willing to be itself. Traditionally speaking, women are considered as the others. Since they are assumed as objects without a spirit/self, the gender-based expectations are imposed on them. Consequently, self-consciousness does not take place or is denied, leading to the feeling of despair
