چکیده :
This study investigates Edgar Allan Poe’s dual pursuit of perfection through both grand and minute scales, alongside his use of aesthetic escapism and idealism, through the lens of Immanuel Kant’s aesthetic theory. By juxtaposing the expansive estate in The Domain of Arnheim (1847) with the precise, miniature beauty of Landor’s Cottage (1849), the study delves into Poe’s contrasting macrocosmic and microcosmic perspectives on beauty and the sublime. Kant’s concepts of the sublime and the beautiful provide a framework for understanding Poe’s aesthetic philosophy, where the sublime is reflected in the grandiose landscapes and the beautiful in the meticulous details. These idealized environments function as utopian visions, offering an escape from the imperfections of reality. The analysis reveals how these landscapes act as sanctuaries, shielding their creators from the harshness of life and death, thereby underscoring Poe’s belief in beauty as a form of salvation. The findings highlight the interplay between perfection and escapism in Poe’s aesthetic vision, demonstrating how his dual focus on grand and modest scales of beauty serves as a means of achieving aesthetic and existential solace.
