چکیده :
Textbooks play a significant role in shaping language learners’ cultural understanding and beliefs through the content and presentation of cultural values. Considering this crucial role, the current comparative study investigated the representation of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory (1980) in the Connect and Prospect series. This analysis studied three paired dimensions i.e. power distance, individualism, and masculinity and examined how these cultural values were integrated into each textbook. It was revealed that collectivist values resonating with Iranian learners were highlighted more in Prospect, whereas Connect adopted a Western perspective, emphasizing individualism and competition. It was also indicated that Prospect’s feminine traits contrasted with Connect’s masculine focus. To sum up, the findings emphasized Prospect’s focus on hierarchy and cooperation contrasts with Connect’s focus on independence and achievement. This comparative content analysis revealed how these two common series convey cultural values, which either align with or differ from learners’ own cultural environment. These results will have practical implications for textbook developers and educators, emphasizing the need to design culturally sensitive materials that meet learners’ needs and enhance intercultural competence as aligning textbook content with learners’ cultural backgrounds and prepare them for participation in a globalized world.
