Analyzing Teacher's Perspective and Purposes of Using Chat GPT in EFL Classes in Iranian Institutes

چکیده :
The popularity of chat GPT and AI tools has been radically increased in recent years. Using chat GPT and AI becomes also common in classrooms specially in foreign languages classes. Using these chat bots, teachers have been involved in not long ago, therefore there can be various kinds of ideas about utilizing different AI tools during class. Due to dearth of such studies in the context of Iran this study investigates perspective of Iranian EFL teachers toward AI devices specially chat GPT, also it surveys how teachers use them in different steps of teaching or activities. The data collection for this study was collected through online interviews with 13 teachers responded. Sample teachers were randomly selected among foreign language institutes. The qualitative data of the study has been coded and analyzed by MAXQDA. The results suggest that teachers view toward chat GPT can be categorized as Effectiveness, Student engagement, Teacher training needs, Integration challenges and etc. Also they show teacher's purposes to use chat GPT in classroom are Cultural and contextual understanding, Creative writing and storytelling, Resource for language input and so forth. Further suggestions for stakeholders are provided.
