چکیده :
Needs analysis, a critical component in English Language Teaching (ELT), has evolved significantly since its inception within the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) domain. As Nunan (1988) elucidates, it is a systematic process that delineates the linguistic competencies and learning modalities requisite for distinct learner groups. A successful course hinges on accurately identifying and addressing these needs, as emphasized by Garcia (2002). This study critically evaluates five established models: sociolinguistic, systemic, learning-centered, learner-centered, and task-based approaches. Each model offers a unique lens through which to analyze and comprehend learners' requirements. The paper provides an overview of the key tenets and guidelines set forth by each approach, followed by a discussion of their respective merits, drawbacks, and scholarly critiques. Our investigation underscores the limitations of adopting a singular model for needs analysis. Instead, we propose an eclectic synthesis—a hybrid framework that amalgamates the most efficacious elements from these models. Educators are encouraged to draw upon their practical experiences, integrating context-specific and human-affective variables into curriculum design. The proposed framework comprises a set of practical principles, designed to be adaptable to the diverse and multifaceted needs of learners. This approach ensures that language teachers and curriculum developers can construct curricula that are not only responsive to learners' unique contexts but also grounded in pedagogical efficacy. The findings of this study contribute significantly to the field of ELT, offering a robust, adaptable model for needs analysis that can enhance the design and implementation of language courses.
