چکیده :
Enhancing language skills is a key purpose for both language teachers and learners. Providing L2 learners with input that is comprehensible, sufficient and intriguing is a requirement for improving language skills. Choosing the right input text is a crucial undertaking. Among the available choices is using poetry as an authentic and interesting text. The present article reviews and evaluates the ideas and notions of different scholars and theorizers in the field of L2 learning and teaching on characteristics and applicability of poetry in L2 classrooms. Generally, they agree that apart from its authenticity, poetry has the capacity to absorb and engage learners more deeply. Poetry has been considered useful because of its rhythmic structure and memorability of lexical items. Nevertheless, opponents claim that poetical language is complicated and contains heightened vocabulary which may be useless for language learning. It was finally figured out that poems and songs can be potentially suitable for the L2 learners if they are utilized properly and systematically.
