چکیده :
In sworn (official) translation, official documents have always been required to be translated completely and faithfully. According to the letter of oath of sworn translators in Iran, a complete, accurate, and impartial rendition of a source text is mandatory. Iranian sworn translators, however, are asked by their clients to translate official documents mostly for specific purposes such as providing evidence for their socio-economic stability, marital and employment status to be granted a visa by foreign embassies in Tehran. Using Nord’s (1991) translation-oriented text analysis and regarding official translators as experts in the translatorial action whose role is to make sure that the translations are functionally adequate in the view of target-text users, this study argues for the possibility of partial/incomplete sworn translations of official documents as long as they meet the purpose of the translation set by visa applicants as initiators and embassies as target-text users, provided that the coherence and fidelity rules, as proposed by Vermeer (1984), are met by these translations.
