چکیده :
Automated written corrective feedback (AWCF) tools like ChatGPT, which leverage machine learning and natural language processing techniques, have the capability to identify and correct a wider range of L2 error types compared to basic spelling and grammar checkers like Grammarly. Since its launch by OpenAI in November 2022, ChatGPT has sparked both controversy and optimism, particularly regarding its potential as an educational tool to enhance human capabilities. This study examines the use of ChatGPT to assist 30 EFL students from an Iranian university in understanding and improving their English writing skills in comparison to Grammarly. The findings indicate that ChatGPT offers a more effective and comprehensive alternative for helping Iranian English Language Learners (ELLs) enhance their writing. The analysis was implemented during an article writing assignment for second-year students, and the results of a questionnaire assessing students' attitudes towards using ChatGPT and Grammarly as grammar-checking tools are discussed. Finally, the implications of incorporating AWCF technologies into L2 writing courses are explored.
