چکیده :
Since its publication, Don DeLillo’s White Noise has been a focal point of literary analysis as one of the best examples of postmodern texts. Many attempts have been made to shed light upon the significance of various postmodern aspects of this work of fiction, yet little attention has been paid to the question of why the characters in the novel exhibit such behaviors which might be interpreted as postmodern. This article seeks to answer this question through analyzing the novel from a Bourdieusian point of view by deploying his concept of habitus. Habitus has a very special place in Bourdieu’s conceptual framework. It is the thinking tool which bounds subjectivism and objectivism, agency and obedience. This article argues that analyzing the practices of individuals in the novel in light of this thinking tool can establish why and how their habitus has been structured and also what kind of structuring effects their habitus has produced. The findings suggest that field regularities and various forms of capital are able to structure characters’ individual and collective habitus. On top of that, many actions and worldviews portrayed by different characters in the novel are the result of their structured habitus.
