چکیده :
Psychogeography is a concept developed by Guy Debord and Situationist International that aims to demonstrate the psychological relationship between the citizens and the city. In Alan Moore’s From Hell, the use of psychogeography is twofold. Moore makes Jack the Ripper a faux-psychogeographer and puts him in a psychological gothic horror tale using the influence of city of London on him. Furthermore, it is used for an investigation on how exerting control over the masses by the means of place stops their initiative to build counternarratives to the offical ones and the devestating implications of that for a society. Essentially, the main character’s psyche and the city are intertwined to add a new twist to the old Victorian villain Jack the Ripper. By positing him as a false psychogeographer in a psychological horror story, Moore posits that he lacks the proper constructive relationship that a citizen should have with his city and as a result he cannot shape a cohesive identity for himself and thus commits his evil murders. I also argue that Moore uses the victims’ inability to form a bond with the cityscape and shape their own narrative as a social commentary on how destructive it can be to make a city exclude certain inhabitants, especially women.
