Analyzing The Movie Pig by Mani Haghighi Through The Lens of Bakhtin's Carnival Theory

چکیده :

This study employs the Carnival theory by Bakhtin to provide depth to the analysis of the film Pig by Mani Haghighi. Mani Haghighi is an Iranian director who incorporates magical elements and boldly addresses societal issues in his films. What distinguishes Mani Haghighi from other contemporaries in Iran is his focus on imaginative and supernatural elements in his storytelling. By analyzing the protagonist of the film Hasan, we can identify key factors of carnival theory in this movie specifically by the acquisition of different identities through the movie by the protagonist. This research will explore how this film has managed to critique censorship in the Iranian film industry as well as analyze this work from the perspective of grotesque realism to catch how this movie is blurring lines of realism and absurdity. This study will examine how some major elements from Bakhtin's theory like humor and chaos align with the central themes of this film. This work is an ideal candidate to be analyzed through the theory of Bakhtin because of its use of chaos, humor, and satire we can also highlight shifting societal positions which are both major elements when it comes to Carnival. Ultimately, the goal of this study is to enhance our appreciation of the movie by exploring the complexities throughout the plot.
