چکیده :
Abstract This essay explores the postcolonial dimensions of Hassan Blasim’s The Corpse Exhibition and Other Stories of Iraq with a particular focus on diasporic identity and cultural hybridity. Blasim, an Iraqi writer and filmmaker, presents a collection of short stories that delve into the horrors and absurdities of war-torn Iraq. Through a postcolonial lens, this study examines how Blasim’s narratives mirrors the complexities of identity formation and cultural hybridity experienced by individuals in the diaspora. Blasim’s work is characterized by a blend of surrealism and stark realism, which serves to highlight the fragmented and hybrid nature of diasporic identities. The stories in “The Corpse Exhibition” depict characters who grapple with the intersections of their native and adopted cultures, often facing cultural conflicts and identity crises. The essay argues that Blasim’s portrayal of these characters underscores the fluid and dynamic nature of identity in a globalized world. By analysing key themes including displacement, cultural conflict, and the search for belonging, this study demonstrates how Blasim’s narratives contribute to a broader understanding of postcolonial literature. The concept of cultural hybridity is central to this analysis, as it includes the blending and merging of different cultural identities that define the diasporic experience. Through this exploration, the thesis aims to shed light on the ways in which Blasim’s work challenges essentialist notions of identity and offers alternative perspectives on belonging and cultural integration. In conclusion, Hassan Blasim’s “The Corpse Exhibition” provides a rich and nuanced portrayal of diasporic identity and cultural hybridity, making it a significant text for postcolonial studies. This thesis intends to contribute to the ongoing discourse on the complexities of identity in the postcolonial context, highlighting the importance of literature in articulating the experiences of those living between cultures.
