چکیده :
As the 21 century continues to unfold, language proficiency tests, including IELTS, have been recognized as standard gateways to educational and professional opportunities for immigrant candidates. While the common belief is that IELTS preparation programs usher language learners towards linguistically-informed pathways, the sociolinguistic dimensions of this test have roughly sunk into oblivion. Drawing upon chronotopes (Bakhtin, 1989), if we consider individuals as rational social actors, whose interactions hinge on their assessment of what provides the highest utility, it is probable that their material, imaginary, and textual experience within IELTS atmosphere formulates and reformulates their perceived image of normal interactions. Given the polycentric normalcies caused by the immigration discourse, the current study investigated IELTS candidates’ choices of language to establish rapport and interact with their classmates in an intensive 10-months IELTS preparation program. The results of the study demonstrated candidates’ potential lack of access to a high-resolution image of natural speech, particularly in accordance with problems they encountered using the speech functions to communicate everyday-life messages. The way students tend to explain, paraphrase, express their opinion, and provide personal information was culturally redefined which affected their ability to effectively perform these functions.
