چکیده :
The relationship between human beings with each other and nature has received much scholarly attention in recent decades due to the fact that human is the source of many environmental damages. The British dark fantasy writer, Tim Lebbon, fleshes out human and non-human relationships and the challenges of the Anthropocene in his novels. Even though his novels have been the subjects of many studies and been looked at from various perspective, Coldbrook (2012) has been generally understudied. Deploying Donna J. Haraway’s conceptualization of the Anthropocene and Terrapolis, this study aims to explore the impacts that scientists and priests have on the earth. It also examines life in the alternate world of Gaia in the novel. I argue that the chaos in and destruction of the earth in Coldbrook is an effect of a religious crusade manufactured by misguided priests in opposition to the scientific endeavors of the scientists in the novel. Moreover, the alternate world of Gaia in the novel is depicted as a Terrapolis where human-made binaries become meaningless. The findings of the study suggest that scientific endeavors, human exceptionalism, and religious arrogance lead to the destruction of the earth. However, Gaia, where hierarchical binaristic formulations are deconstructed, presents an opening for multispecies flourishing.
