چکیده :
Background: Think-aloud Protocol is an efficient method in the field of brain science to disclose what is in the translator’s mind, a way to take a look at the “black box”, so to speak. Purpose: This study explored translation strategies employed by five translation students while translating informative texts. Method: Five BA translation students were requested to translate two informative texts while the Bandicam screen recorder, recorded all their activities. Afterward, the captured videos were analyzed by the researcher-made taxonomy of data coding derived from Krings (1986) and Gerloff (1986). Results: The strategies comprised thirteen main strategies, namely Unit of Translation (UT), Machine Translation (MT), Machine Revision (MR), Equivalent Retrieval (ER), Problem Identification (PI), CAT Optimization (CATO), Competing Potential Replacement (CPR), Inferencing and Reasoning (IR), Reading the ST (RS), Noting the Potential Problems (NPP), Linguistic Analysis (LA), Revision (R), and Translation Maxims (TM). The results revealed that the participants applied ten strategies in translating informative texts, the most frequent of which was Inferencing and Reasoning (IR). They were not sufficiently aware of CATO and their reliance on their knowledge was completely obvious. Furthermore, they did not observe TM in their translation. Implications: The findings of this study might help prepare programs at colleges to teach translation students. This TAP research provided a real situation and real strategies for the translation of the informative text for translation students in the university.
