چکیده :
This study strives to illuminate the function of desire in Woody Allen’s “The Kugelmass Episode” from a Lacanian perspective. This work is a quintessential postmodern short story, swarming with a wide range of typical postmodern techniques, consisting of intertextuality, hypertextuality, paranoia, playfulness, parody, and humor. As a Jewish artist, he has utilized Jewish culture and characteristics in the service of humor. The protagonist of the story, Kugelmass, is a Jewish middle-aged man, like Allen himself at the time, suffering from middle-age crisis, such as fear of death and lack of excitement. Desire is resulted from what Lacan calls, objet petit a, which is associated with incompleteness. Due to the desire’s impossible nature, Allen and Kugelmass both seek it in the form of fantasies. Fantasy is manifested in the form of Kugelmass’s transfer into the magical world of literature and Allen’s writing leading lady roles for his loved ones. The films, working as the mirror stage, provide the possibility of gaze. The Imaginary Order, whether in the form of Allen’s movies or Kugelmass’s magical literary world, rests in the realm of fantasy. However, transferring the same relationships to the Symbolic Order proves ineffective.
